hhhHolly B Geraci is a life member of the conservation Council for Hawaii. The Conservation Council is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to protecting native Hawaiian plants, animals, and ecosystems for future generations.

The biggest news is the executive order by Pres. Obama on the proposed expansion of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands coral reef ecosystem reserve.

Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument was created on August 26, 2016, under the authority of the 1906 antiquities act.  Long line commercial fishing targeting tuna and swordfish is resulted in not only decreased populations of those fish, but the side effect of by catch of turtles, dolphins and sharks, which are killed, or worse yet, injured and thrown back to die in the ocean.

According to the latest issue of Leah, the conservation Council’s newsletter, theme national Marine Monument, which was established in 2006 by George W. Bush, was already the largest marine protected area in the world.

Scientists tell us we need to protect 30% of the world’s oceans, and currently we are only at 2%. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are also considered sacred to the native Hawaiian people. The remains of the battle of Midway, and the wreck of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown also lie in the proposed expansion  area.  Help Holly Help will manage your contributions to the conservation Council for Hawaii on the help Holly help website
